The kids are back in school, the leaves are falling and there’s a chill in the air. Fall is in full swing, and there are a few yard cleanup chores that need to be tended to before you hibernate for the winter. After all, who doesn’t want to welcome spring with a blossoming landscape?

Fall Landscape Cleanup Tips
- Feed your grass. Think of fall fertilization as a time to refuel and replenish your lawn. By using fertilizer, the grass can soak up nutrients and spend time recovering from the blistering summer heat. Plus, building a healthy, nutrient-rich lawn is one of the best ways to protect your property from the impending winter weather.
- Aerate the lawn. When rainfall pools on your grass, it’s important to aerate compressed soil. You see—aeration loosens soil, and enables water and nutrients to reach the roots.
- Mow low. Give your lawn one last good mow, making this trim a short cut.
- Trim dead limbs. Lifeless limbs and branches can succumb to winter’s harsh winds and heavy snow, endangering not only your tree’s health, but also you and your home. Be sure to lightly trim cracked, diseased and loose limbs close to the trunk.

- Collect leaves. Clearing your lawn of leaves and sticks will prevent the heavy, wet foliage from suffocating the turf. Dark, moist environments are breeding grounds for disease, so this step is a must!
- Plant new bulbs. Fall isn’t just about ‘closing up shop.’ It’s also an ideal time to plant new bulbs, to enjoy for spring’s first blooms. Consider daffodils or tulips, and plant after the first frost so that the bulbs will stay cool all winter long.
